The idea for Synki became apparent a couple of years ago. With all the email and electronic calendars available from work and the well known providers, we noticed that we still needed an old-fashioned paper calendar in the kitchen to get the family planning done. Why can't we share calendars in a simple way between phones from different brands? Why is it so difficult to share calender information between providers?
As there was no solution at hand - with 'technical backgrounds' - we started digging into the wonderful and complex world of calendaring and started building a prototype. The goal: build an open system that works with any calendaring solution. The system needed to consist of an electronic display to replace the traditional paper calendar at home and an app to view the calendar when not at home. One thing lead to another: we created 'Synki'.
Synki team - September 2018
Well,.. it's short, easy to remember and it stands for a couple of things:
1. Synchronize - as simple as possible - all your calendars... no matter..you keep using your favourite tooling.
2. 'Sink' all the calendar information from your family/group members to 1 shared calendar in real-time...so you have overview.
3. Distribute the shared calendar to whom you want. To phones/tablets/pc's.
We created Synki out of personal need. We like to stick to some of our original thoughts about the service:
1. No advertisements. Next to the fact that these would take up valuable calendar space, we think they are not appropriate when looking at a calendar.
2. Keep your data...yours! You already share planning data with the calendar software or service you use. If you share your planning data with Synki, it will be used only for calendar purposes. We use the data to a minimum, data we do not need is flushed. We do not share data with third parties.
3. Create a universal experience ..independent of the equipment you use. This is quite a technical challenge for something seemingly trivial as a calendar.
4. We strive to support a model where you can quit using paper calendars altogether and re-use equipment that you already own: your phone(s), old ipad(s) etc.
An easy way to get all calendars together..

Synki creates a shared calendar for a family or a group of people. A calendar manager creates this group. Each member of the group gets a column in the shared calendar. Members can can keep on using existing calendar software and invite the shared calendar in events they want. These events are displayed - in real time - in the members column of the shared calendar.
Synki eliminates the need for a paper calendar, it can display the shared calendar on an electronic calendar device (which is a pretty cool gadget in your kitchen) and a number of apps on the phones of calendar members.
These plans require you to use only accounts from that provider. It is not possible/difficult to synchronize calendars from other accounts, like other providers or work etc.
Synki uses technology to overcome this problem and allows members of the same calendar to use the provider/equipment/calendar (or even multiple) they want. Synki focuses on calendars, it does not solve sharing issues on other services.
Synki runs parallel to whatever calendar software you use. After the calendar manager configures your email(s) in the shared calendar, all you have to do is invite Synki in the meetings you want to share. Synki takes care of the rest: processing your event, updating the shared calendar and triggering updates to all member apps.
It should. However, there might be restrictions imposed by your country's government regarding the use of certain functions like encryption. If there are restrictions Synki might not work. You can also be in a network where restrictions may be applied (e.g. to certain internet destinations, ports are filtered etc.) that might block. Also, the system and your browser you want to run Synki on might block it from working.
Yes. The shared calendar app as well as the calendar manager work on mobile.
Synki publishes an overview in resource view. Every member has its own column on the shared calendar. The calendar manager can authorize sources that are allowed to publish on a column of the shared calendar. For a column, there can be multiple sources: e.g. your work email, your calendar(s) with google/apple/microsoft etc..
Instead of processing e-mails with a calendar attachment (ics file), it is possible to send e-mails without any calendaring info. Synki wil use it's artificial intelligence NLP (Natural Language Processing) functie to scan to e-mail for dates. Any relevant dates are placed automatically on the calendar. At the moment, Synki's AI supports English and Dutch. The AI can plan ahead up till three years (from the current date). Activities with a date in the past are ignored in the scan.
Just include me@synki.com as one of the participants to the meeting. We advise you to make me@synki.com one of your contacts.
The first password is given to you by the calendar manager. So (s)he knows the password. To prevent anyone from knowing your password, you have to change it at the first login.
Currently Synki uses English and Dutch languages, but making an additional number of other languages available is high on our wishlist.
Yes. Timezones are supported. The shared calendar is in a particular (configurable) timezone. If events come in from different timezones they are translated to the shared-calendar timezone. Except for all-day events like newyearsday.
If you invite Synki on a meeting that is private, it is treated as private.
When you log in with the 'remember me' checkbox checked, a token will be installed on your device that allows direct login. The token is valid for one month. Your password is not stored. It is important to NOT check the 'remember me' box on a shared/public device as other users will be able to login on your account. When you select 'logout' in the calendar, the token will be removed.
Synki has an import function that allows you to import ics calendar files.
In most cases, the e-mail is in your spam folder. Alternatively, the calendar manager can renew your activation by deleting/adding your email address. The activation e-mail will be sent again.
Your Synki Calendar works much better: the address bar is hidden, so more room for calendering, the icon is linked to https://synki.com/Login. This way the login takes up less time. When you selected the 'Remember me' option, you are logged in seamlessly.
If your Android device supports PWA, Synki will show a red + sign on the top of the screen. Clicking this will install the App automatically. You can also select the browser menu option 'Add to Home Screen' to install.

On the desktop you can create a shortcut to https://synki.com/Login. If your browser supports PWA, Synki will show a red + sign on the top of the screen. Clicking this will install the App automatically.
You can use the password manager of your device to remember your credentials. On private devices you can also tick the 'remember me' option when logging in.
The calendar manager can reset your credentials with a temporary password. You have to renew your password at the first login. Store your credentials at a save place.
In the app, press the top line with your calendar members. The menu will open. Choose exit to leave the menu

You can book events directly in Synki (internal). These events can be changed/deleted by everyone in the shared calendar. External events can be booked from authorized e-mails. They can be countered with a change proposal. The meeting organizer has to accept the change(s). Most systems allow changes in time and location.
When you go in the details of the meeting, you see either a black star (internal) or white star (external) symbol. You can also look at the organizer. The organizer contains either a Username (internal) or e-mailaddress (external).
No. The meeting organizer (an authorized e-mail) is the only one who can send out a cancellation.
In the app, open the menu by clicking on the top line. Select 'Settings'. Select your desired timezone.

If you are browsing in private/incognito mode we cannot access local storage where pictures are stored. Please use another colortheme in these situations.
You have to contact the calendar manager. (S)he can add new users.
These icons give indication of the status of your app. A green clock means the app is able to handle alarms. If the clock is red, unfortunately it not (yet) possible. The icon next to it gives an indication of your app's activity: e.g. this icon will flash red if there is an incoming update on the shared calendar. Depending on your activity, the calendar will refresh.
The red exclamation mark indicates that one or more sources (e-mail addresses) used for this column are not validated yet. Invitations for these sources will not show up on the calendar.
The red exclamation mark indicates that this is an external meeting that is adapted in your shared calendar. The meeting organizer has not confirmed the changes made yet.
Yes. Use the refresh/reload button of your browser.
When you define an alarm on an event, Synki will generate a notification. Notifications are handled on your device. Often, specific settings are available on your device to deal with Notifications (e.g. for sound)
In order to generate alarms in your device, Synki uses service-worker and notification technology. If your device/browser supports these, Synki will ask to enabled them. If successfull, a green clock will appear in the calendar screen. If support is not (yet) enabled, the clock will turn red.
Yes. That is possible. Synki allows up to 3 alarms per meeting in an alarmlist. Synki has pre-defined alarms, but you can specify/tailor your alarms for yourself too.
When you create a meeting, click on the clock-icon. Alarm definition fields will appear. In the first line you can specify when you want your alarm to go off: before the start, after the start, before the end, after the end. On the next line you can specify the time (days/hours/minutes). The last line specifies if the alarm should be repeated and what time interval should be used (hours/minutes). To add the alarm to your list, push the 'green clock-button'.
You can receive alarms for all members of the calendar by selecting the columns in the reminders part of the 'Settings' menu. Only alarms will be generated for the columns you activated. You can change the setting at any time.
No, if you close the app, alarms will not be generated anymore. If you have Synki active, but as a background process, alarms will be generated. This is a typical smartphone scenario.
Yes. Make sure the option 'Notifications' is on in the experimental features tab of Safari.
In the app, open the menu by clicking on the top line. Select 'Import'. Select your ics file and the calendar member(s) you want to import to. Click 'Import'. After the file is parsed you are able to Accept or Discard the imported result. The organizer of the imported events is/are the column user(s) that you selected
Yes, if nothing changes in the events, import the calendar file again and discard it. The imported events will be removed.
The import will try to map any attendee email address to column(s) on the calendar. If the email cannot be mapped, Synki will skip it.
Close your browser or browser tab.
Click on the 'shop' button. There you can select one of our propositions. Synki accounts become active direct after payment. If your order included hardware, please account for shipment time to your address.
Synki supports payment via creditcard. In the Netherlands also iDeal is supported.
Drop us an email on info@synki.com with your information.
Well..this depends on the systems operating system and the particular browser (version) you use. The functions Synki need, have to be supported by your system's OS. Synki needs a relative new browser that supports Server-sent events, web crypto. We advise to check your system capabilities and browser version before ordering.
Yes, javascript needs to be enabled. If not, synki will give a message that it cannot run. The dynamics of calendar needs functionality that we cannot realize with html/css alone.

Yes, but with different device accounts. Device accounts only work on 1 system.
Yes, that is possible. However, a device account can be active on only 1 device. If you use it on another device, the first device will be logged out.
Most browsers have an option to 'add to home screen' a certain page. This will create a button on your tablet desktop. When you open this, Synki will load without address bar.
We're on twitter. In the app, you can also select the Help/What's new menu option.
Send an email with your support question to info@synki.com.
